Sheikh Zakzaky’s only surviving son awaits outcome of his petition to NJC requesting the body to sanction two “erring” SANs, VP/acting President Osinbajo and AGF Malami for failing to respect ruling of competent court of the land, while being very senior members of the bar, in refusing to free Sheikh Zakzaky.
A judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja, Justice Kolawale had ordered the release of the IMN leader Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky and his wife Zeenat Ibrahim both of who have been in illegal detention with the DSS since 2015. He also ordered that the duo be paid damages in the sum of 50 million Naira and be provided with a residence in any state of their choice in the north of Nigeria.
Following the claim by the government that the IMN leader was under ‘protective custody’ the court also ordered that he be provided with police protection after being escorted home by an Assistant Inspector General of Police. None of these has been obeyed by the government.
With the contempt of court by the Nigerian government, the only surviving son of the IMN leader, Muhammad petitioned the SANs for their roles in a government that is disobedient to a court of competent jurisdiction. Other groups including Civil Righs Organizations and Christian Organizations have joined in the call for the release of the IMN leader.
Also in its address on Democracy Day the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) called on the Nigerian government to respect the courts and release Sheikh Zakzaky and Sambo Dasuki both of who have been ordered to be released by court. In a similar response by the presidential adviser on corruption Tsige Sagay SAN lambasted the government for disrespecting court orders.
Responding to the persistent public pressure on the government for disrespecting the court, the Minister of Information, Lai Muhammad said there were security issues restraining the government from obeying the court order and releasing Sheikh Zakzaky but was again condemned by the public that security considerations known to the government alone are not genuine reasons to disregard and disrespect the courts.
Meanwhile the IMN is waiting for the immediate and unconditional release of its leader.
